New Wave artist-in-residence Kirk Henriques will lead workshop participants on an artistic adventure to reimagine the local community that brings us together, free from racial barriers. Participants will be invited to use a map of West Palm Beach as a template to artistically express their vision for the community using watercolor, chalk, and colored pencils. Guests will be encouraged to share and discuss their creations in a safe space at the end of the workshop.

The exhibition, Their Own Truths: The Art of Sky Cubacub, Riva Lehrer, Jeffrey Mansfield, and David Richards, encompasses recent works by four innovative artists who explore the experience of disability. The collection of paintings, garments, sculptures, and photographs seeks to change perceptions and to open minds. The showing is free and open to the public from December 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, at The Square in West Palm Beach, Florida. A series of lectures and programs will accompany the exhibition, and a private opening reception will be held on December 4 in collaboration with New Wave Art Wknd.

Artist-in-Residence Kirk Henriques will be hosting guests in his studio as part of the NWAW 2022 festivities. Join us to see and hear about the work that Kirk has been working on during his residency.

The star panel features past New Wave resident Roberto Visani, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program Director Kendal Henry, and Cortney Lane Stell, the Executive Director & Chief Curator of Black Cube.

Gopal will lead the panel on a discussion about the Power of Public Art and the role of artwork in public settings and its effect on the community.

New Wave artist-in-residence Kirk Henriques will lead an overview of map reading skillsets and provide participants with the opportunity to engage in a series of short activities that provide context for learning map reading skills important for every day life. Map making is a part of Kirk's practice, as the concept of space and relationship between figures and their surrounding landscape are central to his painting and allow Kirk to examine his Black male identity in the context of his surroundings, be it the local community or in nature.

Join New Wave for a final open studio event on Friday, Oct 28th with Lulu Varona showcasing the work she created during his New Wave residency! No registration is required.

Please join our current artist-in-residence, Lulu Varona, as she guides us on how to draw a one-page comic strip. The workshop will begin with the artist providing us with an overview of alternative comic styles. Then participants will be encouraged to create their own comic strips to help narrate personal stories. As this is an artistic workshop, participants are encouraged to experiment and try new ways of expressing themselves in a safe space. Comic strips have an outsized influence in Lulu’s artistic practice, so she is happy to share this with us.

In this dynamic class led by current artist-in-residence, Lulu Varona, participants will learn basic embroidery skills. Participants will learn how to use a needle and cotton thread to do a variety of basic stitches, how to make a knot, and how draw an image or text.

The artist-led workshop produced in collaboration with Rohi’s Readery will begin with a short powerpoint presentation discussing various ways artists use the human body to communicate emotions and ideas through non-verbal means; artists depict and pose the body to communicate joy, fear, excitement, triumph, and many other states of being. Participants will contemplate and respond to the communicative potential of the human form; participants will be asked to pose their bodies, change their expression, and even consider their surroundings (lighting, background, dress) to communicate an idea/emotion. These poses will be photographed and subsequently shared with the group for discussion.

This class is open to adults and children ages 6+.

In this artist-led workshop produced in collaboration with Rohi’s Readery, participants will be asked to reimagine existing public artworks whose content is contested for one reason or another. During our current moment, historic monuments honoring the Confederacy, Christopher Columbus, and others have been the subject of debate. In response, some monuments have been removed, while others have been addressed through art interventions. One example is the Robert E. Lee Monument in Richmond Virginia. Before its final removal it became not only a site of protest but a myriad of creative works of art including dance performances, projected installations, and graffiti. Participants will be asked to consider how they might recontextualize an existing work of art that they find problematic and discuss as a group.

This class is open to adults and children ages 8+.

Happy Pride Month! To celebrate, we are thrilled to share that Devin will be participating in Pride Night At The Square. Devin will once again lead the “Who Am I and How Do I Grow!” workshop, a repeat by popular demand.

This youth-focused event invites attendees to create their own self-portrait based on a flower or plant that represents their self identity. Participants will be encouraged to leave their portrait as part of a larger alter being built on Saturday which celebrates our individual uniqueness in a diverse community.
